Welsh Police Football Association,
Merthyr Motor Auctions Trophy Final

This Final between Dyfed Powys Police and South Wales Police, was played at Carmarthen Town’s ground on Tuesday 30th March 2004, on an absolutely gorgeous Spring afternoon. The Dyfed kit was an acquired taste, which made the South Wales kit seem a lot better that it actually was, but I digress ...

The first period of the match provided some quite poor football, with little if any in the way of excitement to report, and no chances until after 5 minutes, Tom Warren of S. Wales played a good ball into James Ley, he converted the chance, but it was disallowed for offside. Tom Warren and Mark Standon of S. Wales, were proving to be the most influential players both on the park, with Warren shooting wide from 16 yds.

Both were distributing the ball better. It was almost 25 minutes before Dyfed had their first shot, when a through ball to their centre forward, saw him meet it in stride with a firm right foot drive, which whistled past the post.

S. Wales winger Jason Broughton was starting to impose himself on the match, making several good runs down the left wing, but unfortunately no one was able to connect with the good crosses he was supplying. After 32 mins, S. Wales deservedly took the lead, when Leigh Stimpson passed out of defence to Tom Warren who played a great ball to James lay on the edge of the penalty area, one on one with Dyfed’s stand in goalkeeper, he stroked the ball into the net.

For the rest of the half, S. Wales dominated, with several corners being won, and chances created, the best of which fell to James Ley, he seemed certain to score, until an  absolutely wonderful challenge by Dave Mallin, dispossessed him. The Dyfed keeper made a good save with his foot from Ryan Hartley, to keep the deficit to just 1 goal at the interval.

During the half time period, the Match sponsor Alan Davies, was observed serving tea to the Welsh Committee, the Chairman was unofficially reprimanded for this, he immediately resigned as Treasurer, but no one took any notice.

The second half, proved a much more entertaining affair, with S. Wales dominating, South Wales scored 4 further goals one scrambled home from a corner, another following a mercurial run down the right wing by Jason Broughton his cross was struck home from 6 yds by Mark Standon. Dyfed got a consolation goal, when their No. 10, who was their most influential player, Dwain Evans scored, he beat the keeper to a ball on the right hand edge of the Penalty area, an tried to lift the ball over Rob Cronick as he advanced, Rob managed to get his hand to the ball, but couldn’t prevent it going into the net.

Making it a Hat Trick of

Trophy Final wins for them. A feat only achieved by South Wales, since the Trophy started in 1978.
